Agent builders
Sports MCP servers for AI agents: the types and how to choose
If you ask Claude, Cursor, Codex or another MCP client for a sports MCP server, you will find servers that do very different jobs. This page sorts them by job and says what each type needs from you.

Short answer
Sports MCP servers do one of three jobs: they expose a provider’s API documentation so a coding assistant can write integration code, they expose a provider’s data such as odds or statistics so an agent can query it, or they expose derived research intelligence such as ranked news and matchup context. Pick by the job your agent must do, then check what the server needs from you, usually an API key. DeepChamp’s MCP server is the third type and its free tools need no key.
Three kinds of sports MCP server
| Kind | What it gives the agent | Typical requirement | Example, as described on its own site on October 30, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Documentation server | API reference, endpoint search and schemas, so an assistant can write correct integration code. No live data. | A provider API key. | Sportradar’s developer portal describes an MCP server for its documentation and says it makes no live API calls. |
| Data server | The provider’s own data, queried in natural language: odds, fixtures, props, injuries, results. | A provider API key and a paid plan or trial. | OpticOdds describes an MCP integration for Claude to query its odds data. |
| Research-intelligence server | Derived analysis: schedule and rest context, ranked news, briefs, scores and a research agent. No odds. | None for free tools; paid tools use a payment protocol or an API key when they are live. | DeepChamp for Agents: get_daily_slate and get_matchup_context are free today. |
There are also open-source servers on GitHub that wrap a public scoreboard or a vendor’s API. Before you rely on one, check its licence, when it was last maintained, which data it actually returns and what that data’s terms allow you to do with it.
How to choose
- 1Start from the task. Writing integration code against a provider needs a documentation server. Answering “what is the price” needs a data server. Answering “what changed and why does it matter” needs a research-intelligence server.
- 2Check the requirement. Most data servers need an account with the provider before the first call; a research-intelligence server with a free tier lets you test with no signup.
- 3Read the tool list. Good servers describe each tool in one clear sentence, mark read-only tools as read-only and return typed errors. A server with dozens of vague tools is hard for an agent to use.
- 4Read the licence for the data the tools return, as you would for a REST API. See the evaluation guide.
- 5Combine them. Agents commonly use a data server for facts and prices and a research-intelligence server for context.
Connect DeepChamp for Agents
The server speaks Streamable HTTP at https://deepchampai.com/mcp. The free data tools are get_daily_slate and get_matchup_context; they are read-only, need no key and are limited to 20 requests a minute and 300 a day per IP. Two more free calls, request_capability and rate_response, let an agent tell us what is missing or whether a response was useful, with enumerated fields only. Paid tools appear in the tool list only when their product line is live.

What this server does not do
- It returns no odds, prices, price comparisons, box scores or stat lines.
- It places no bets and gives no betting advice. Its output is research and information.
- It claims no win rate, record or return. Signals are estimates, not predictions of outcomes.
- It is for adults 21 and over where betting is legal. Help with problem gambling: 1-800-MY-RESET.
Common questions
Which MCP server should I use for sports betting research?
Use a research-intelligence server for context such as schedule, rest, ranked news and briefs, and a data server for prices and statistics. DeepChamp for Agents is a research-intelligence MCP server whose free tools need no API key; data servers from odds and statistics providers generally require a provider key.
Is there a Claude MCP server for sports betting research?
Yes. Claude Code and Claude Desktop can connect to the DeepChamp for Agents MCP server at the URL on this page, and Claude Code can add it with one command. Other providers also describe MCP integrations that work with Claude; they differ in what data they return and what they require.
Which sports data APIs support the Model Context Protocol?
Some providers publish MCP servers for their own API. As of October 30, 2026, Sportradar describes a documentation MCP server and OpticOdds describes an MCP integration for its odds data, and DeepChamp for Agents offers a remote MCP server for research intelligence. Check each provider’s own documentation for what is current.
Does the DeepChamp MCP server need an API key?
The free tools, get_daily_slate and get_matchup_context, need no key and no signup and are rate limited per IP. Paid tools appear only when their product line is live and will take a machine payment or an API key.
Can a Codex or Cursor agent use DeepChamp for Agents?
Yes. Any MCP client that supports remote Streamable HTTP servers can connect to the DeepChamp MCP server, and any agent that can make an HTTPS request can use the REST API instead. The agent docs list setup steps for Codex, Cursor and other clients.
