What is player prop in sports betting?
By DeepChamp research team · Updated · Methods and limitations
Definition
A player prop is a wager on one athlete's statistical output in a single game, such as passing yards, points, strikeouts or whether a player scores a touchdown, rather than on the result of the game itself. Most are over/under lines on a stated number, settled on official statistics.
How it works
Props come in a few formats. The most common is an over/under on a stat with a number such as 5.5 receptions, usually set at a half point so there is no tie. Others are yes or no markets, such as scoring a touchdown or recording a hit, milestone markets that ask whether a player reaches a stated total or more, and head-to-head comparisons between two players.
Settlement depends on official statistics and on the player taking part. A pre-game scratch commonly voids a prop and returns the stake, while a player who plays and then leaves hurt is often graded on the statistics recorded. Minimum-participation rules and which data source counts vary by operator, so the market rules are part of the bet. Combined stats, such as rushing plus receiving yards, count only the components named in the market.
Pricing differs from a main line. Props can carry a wider margin than a standard spread or total, limits are often lower, and one operator's number can differ noticeably from another's because there is less consensus on a single player's outcome. That makes comparing prices across operators and converting each side to a break-even probability a basic habit.
Hypothetical receptions prop with the margin worked out
A starting wide receiver has a line of 5.5 receptions, with the over at -120 and the under at +100. The over risks $120 to win $100, so it needs 54.55 percent (120 / 220) to break even. The under risks $100 to win $100 and needs 50 percent. Together they total 104.55 percent, so the operator's margin on this pair is 4.55 percentage points. With a half-point line, six or more receptions wins the over and five or fewer wins the under.
Hypothetical numbers for arithmetic only.
Why it matters when you research a bet
Props reward detail, such as role, snap share and matchup, but they also carry a margin and varying settlement rules. Reading the stat projection and the rule set separately keeps a good read on a player from being undone by a voided leg, an unclear stat definition or a price that is worse than it looks.
Common mistakes
- Skipping the definition of the stat. Whether overtime counts, which components make up a combined stat and which data source grades the bet all come from the market rules.
- Pricing only one side. The other side's price reveals the margin, which is often wider on props than on main lines.
- Treating separate props from one game as independent. A player's yardage and a team's pace are linked, which matters if you combine them on one ticket.
Common questions
What is the difference between a player prop and a game line?
A game line, such as a spread, total or moneyline, depends on the final score. A player prop depends on one athlete's statistics, so it can win or lose regardless of which team wins the game.
What happens to a player prop if the player leaves the game injured?
Rules vary by operator, but a player who plays and then leaves is commonly graded on the statistics recorded up to that point, while a player who never takes part is more often voided. Read the market rules to confirm.
