What is live betting in sports betting?

By DeepChamp research team · Updated · Methods and limitations

Definition

Live betting, also called in-play betting, is wagering on a game after it has started, with prices that update continuously as the score, clock and situation change. The markets resemble pregame ones, but quotes are short-lived, markets can be suspended after key events, and a bet can be delayed or rejected.

How it works

Live prices come from models that reprice the game after every meaningful change: a score, a possession, a penalty, an injury, a rain delay. The same markets appear as before the game, such as a spread, a total and a moneyline, along with live-only markets like the next team to score. Because the model must account for time remaining, a total or spread moves even when nothing happens on the scoreboard.

Execution works differently from a pregame bet. Operators commonly hold a submitted bet for a few seconds before accepting it, and they may reject it or ask for confirmation if the price moved in the meantime. Markets are often suspended right after a major event while the price is reset. The video you watch and the data feed the operator uses can be seconds apart, so the picture on screen is not necessarily the state the price reflects.

The research method changes with the clock. A live total can be turned into a required pace, the points or goals needed in the time left, and compared with what the game has produced so far and what each team normally produces. Margins are often wider live because uncertainty is higher and prices must be reset quickly, and the speed invites many quick decisions, so settling in advance which situations deserve a bet is part of the work.

Reading a live total at halftime (hypothetical)

Hypothetical: a 48-minute basketball game with a pregame total of 226.5 reaches halftime with 108 combined points. The live total is posted at 221.5, so the over needs 113.5 more points in the 24 minutes left, about 4.73 per minute. The first half was played at 4.5 points per minute. The over therefore needs a faster second half than the first, while the under has room to win even if the pace holds. Whether either side is good value depends on what pace each team can be expected to play.

Hypothetical numbers for arithmetic only.

Why it matters when you research a bet

Live markets reward speed, which is exactly the condition under which careless decisions get made. Working out ahead of time what number would be worth acting on, which events would change the view, and what a delay or a rejected bet could cost turns an in-game decision into a comparison instead of a reaction. Wagers can lose, so fix your limits before the game starts.

Common mistakes

  • Reacting to a stream or broadcast that runs behind the operator's data, so the price on screen already reflects an event the viewer has not seen yet.
  • Treating a live price as a fresh pregame price; the margin and the information in it differ, and time remaining changes what a number means.
  • Placing a rapid series of bets without a plan, which makes losses easy to chase and results hard to review.

Common questions

Why does my live bet take a few seconds to be accepted?

Operators commonly add a short delay so the price can be checked against the latest state of the game before accepting the bet. If the price moved or the market suspended, the bet may be rejected or offered again at a new price.

Why do live odds disappear after a big play?

Operators suspend a market while they reprice after a major event such as a touchdown, goal or red card. It reopens once the new price is set, which is why the number can look different when it returns.
